Art

At Sacred Heart School, the children’s art is displayed, with pride, throughout. It is enjoyed and celebrated in a variety of ways, in all year groups. Our art work is linked to our thematic curriculum and a focused week, dedicated to art, is set aside each term to work on their art. This week allows the children to immerse themselves in learning new skills, targeted for their ability and age. They are taught how to use a range of appropriate resources and materials and are able to learn, practise and master a skill. Children will work through the milestones, suited to their year group, to ensure a broad range of techniques are learnt and progression is made throughout each year. We also ensure we study famous masters of art from history as well as look at and appreciate local and more modern artists. Each child has a personal sketch book which travels with them through their learning journey. This is a lovely way to track and appreciate their work and progress as they move through the years.

We are extremely lucky to have the support and expertise of our own Artist in Residence. Because of this, she is able to teach across the school to focus on a wide range of key skills, linked to all areas of art. As a Catholic school, one way in which we showcase our artistic talent, is by celebrating it through our sacramental programmes. As a year group, children can work on their individual piece and it is then be bought together, with the guidance of our artist, as a collaborative, reflective creation.

We are beginning to look at using our art work to reach out into the wider community and it is something we have started and will continue to do. Recently, we have been lucky enough to have the chance to produce 2 pieces of art work for Walsgrave University Teaching Hospital. These projects have been prominently displayed for the public to view and enjoy.
